Everton Beat Newcastle 3-1 to Reach Carabao Cup QF
Everton beat Newcastle United 3-1 in the Carabao Cup fourth round at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Thursday night, October 29, 2026, to book a quarter-final tie against fourth-tier Fleetwood Town. James Garner, Hayden Hackney and Thierno Barry scored for the hosts, while Dan Burn replied late for Newcastle.
Garner and Hackney Strike Before Half-Time
Newcastle started brighter and forced Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford into early action, with Harvey Barnes seeing a header kept out and a penalty appeal waved away. But Everton struck first in the 34th minute, when Hackney pounced on loose play and found Garner, who curled an excellent finish into the bottom corner from just inside the area.
Everton doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time with a devastating counter-attack. Pickford started the move, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall drove forward, and Barry crossed from the left for Hackney to guide home his first goal for the club. The hosts went into the interval 2-0 ahead despite Newcastle having more of the ball.
Barry Seals It, Burn Consolation
Newcastle introduced Joelinton, Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa at the interval and pushed hard after the restart, with Wissa and Burn unable to take headed chances. Everton held firm and settled the tie in the 69th minute, when Garner released Dewsbury-Hall down the left and his low delivery found Barry, who took a touch before firing home to make it 3-0.
Burn’s 89th-minute header proved no more than a consolation for the visitors, who were the trophy holders after winning the competition in 2025. The defeat ends Newcastle’s hopes of retaining the cup.
Grealish Absence and Quarter-Final Draw
Everton were without Jack Grealish, who was dropped from the squad following what the club described as a breach of club discipline, reported as an unauthorised absence from training. David Moyes’ side made light of his absence on a night when they had struggled for goals, having failed to score in successive Premier League defeats to Chelsea and Arsenal.
The win sends Everton into the quarter-finals, where they will travel to Fleetwood Town, who stunned Premier League champions Arsenal on penalties earlier in the week. The quarter-finals are scheduled for the week beginning December 14. The other ties see Liverpool host Bournemouth, Crystal Palace welcome Sunderland, and defending champions Manchester City travel to third-tier Bradford City. Everton, who have never won the League Cup, are now one victory away from their first semi-final in the competition since 2016, and the cup remains their clearest chance of ending a trophy drought that stretches back to the FA Cup in 1995.
