2026 WNBA Finals: Atlanta Dream vs Golden State Valkyries — A Historic Championship Showdown Tipped Off in San Francisco
The 2026 WNBA Finals tipped off on October 17 at Chase Center in San Francisco, where the No. 2 seed Golden State Valkyries faced the No. 4 seed Atlanta Dream in a best-of-seven championship series that guarantees the league a brand-new champion.
First-time finalists collide — a first for the league
The WNBA will crown a new champion this season. The Golden State Valkyries are playing in the Finals in only their second year of existence, while the Atlanta Dream are making their fourth Finals appearance — but their first since 2013. Remarkably, neither roster features a player who has ever won the league MVP award: Dream forward Angel Reese finished seventh in this season’s MVP voting, Rhyne Howard eighth, while the Valkyries’ Veronica Burton and Gabby Williams placed tenth and eleventh. It is the first Finals matchup in the modern era without a current or former MVP on either side.
The stars and the stakes
Both franchises were transformed by key offseason additions: the Valkyries signed free agent Gabby Williams, who has led them in scoring, assists and steals through the playoffs, while the Dream traded for Angel Reese, who was named the 2026 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year and has averaged 18 points and 8.4 rebounds this postseason. Atlanta also welcomed back Allisha Gray, cleared to play after missing two semifinal games with a hand injury. The Valkyries swept all three regular-season meetings between the sides, but the last one was on July 4 — both teams say they have changed a great deal since then.
Finals schedule — when and where to watch
Game 1 tipped off on Saturday, October 17 at 3:30 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock from Chase Center. Game 2 stays in Golden State on Monday, October 19 at 8 p.m. ET (USA/Peacock). The series then shifts to Atlanta for Games 3 and 4 (October 22 and 24). If needed, Game 5 returns to Golden State on October 26, Game 6 is in Atlanta on October 29, and a decisive Game 7 would be played at Golden State on October 31. Off the court, outgoing commissioner Cathy Engelbert said ahead of Game 1 that her successor needs “thick skin” as she prepares to retire at year’s end.
