Ryan Coogler’s X-Files Reboot Gets Series Order at Hulu — Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel to Lead
Disney has officially ordered Ryan Coogler’s reimagining of “The X-Files” to series, with the “Black Panther” and “Sinners” director writing and directing the pilot. The announcement was made on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.
New Agents for a New Era
The reimagining stars Danielle Deadwyler (“Till”, “The Piano Lesson”) and Himesh Patel (“Station Eleven”, Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey”) as two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond when assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena. Original “X-Files” creator Chris Carter serves as an executive producer on the new show.
From Pilot to Full Series
The project has been in development for more than three years, since Carter first revealed in 2023 that Coogler was working on a new take on the franchise. Hulu ordered the pilot earlier this year, and Disney has now picked it up for a full series on Hulu in the US, with Disney+ carrying it in the UK. The project falls under Coogler’s five-year exclusive television deal with Disney.
The Legacy of the Original
Created by Chris Carter, the original nine seasons of “The X-Files” aired on Fox from 1993 to 2002 and were a worldwide success with critics and audiences, winning numerous Emmy and Golden Globe awards. Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny starred as FBI Special Agents Dana Scully and Fox Mulder investigating mysterious cases blamed on paranormal phenomena. Two follow-up seasons aired in 2016-2018, alongside two feature films.
Coogler’s Hot Streak
Coogler is coming off a landmark run: his vampire epic “Sinners” was a multi-Oscar winner, adding to the success of “Creed” and the “Black Panther” films. “I’ve loved ‘The X-Files’ for a long time, so getting the chance to write and direct the pilot has meant a great deal to me,” Coogler said in a statement. “What Chris Carter created is special, and we wanted to honor everything that made the original series connect with so many people while also finding our own way into that world.”
