US First Lady Melania Trump has secured a localized cease-fire between Russia and Ukraine in the front-line city of Oleshky, set to begin on October 29, 2026, to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid and the evacuation of civilians. The announcement came through a statement from the first lady’s office on Friday, and was reported by the New York Post.

Oleshky, in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region, is about five miles behind the front lines and is described by Ukrainian authorities as being on the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe. The first lady’s office said the city’s remaining population is made up mostly of elderly residents who urgently need medical attention, medicine, food and clean water. Residents are living with limited electricity, mined roads and regular military attacks.

Ceasefire terms and evacuation

According to the statement, Melania Trump and her representative worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian leadership to define the terms of the localized ceasefire. Non-military teams from both countries will visit residents to assist with evacuations to a country of their choice.

“Residents who wish to evacuate will receive coordinated support and transportation to their preferred destination. I anticipate some will want to go to Russia, and some to Ukraine,” the first lady said in the statement.

Newsmax will accompany the teams to document the evacuation process, the statement added. An estimated 1,700 to 2,000 people remain in Oleshky, including about 50 children. The first lady’s office said food, drinking water and medicine ran out in the city back in February.

Background: humanitarian work and peace push

This is not Melania Trump’s first humanitarian intervention tied to the war. She has previously helped reunite 34 Russian and Ukrainian children with their families. President Donald Trump has been trying to pressure both sides into a broader ceasefire, with his envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner meeting President Volodymyr Zelensky and President Vladimir Putin as the war enters its fourth year.

The Oleshky development follows reports that Putin has agreed to restart three-way peace talks with Ukraine and the United States, with Zelensky meeting American and European officials in Norway, while a broader trilateral meeting is expected after November 10.
