EUFOR Helicopter Crashes in Bosnia, 3 Reported Dead
An Italian CH-47 Chinook helicopter serving with the European Union’s peacekeeping force in Bosnia and Herzegovina crashed near the northern town of Brcko on Thursday, October 29, 2026, killing at least three people and injuring 12 others according to local officials. The European Union Force (EUFOR) confirmed that personnel were killed and injured in the crash but did not immediately release an official casualty figure, and an investigation into the cause is under way.
What happened near Brcko
The helicopter went down during what EUFOR described as a routine operation in the Brcko area, about 180 kilometres northeast of the capital Sarajevo. Photographs published by the Bosnian news portal Klix showed the largely destroyed aircraft lying on a lawn near the village of Gorice in Brcko District. Police, firefighters and emergency medical teams were dispatched to the scene and the area was secured.
Brcko District Mayor Sinisa Milic told Bosnian Serb broadcaster RTRS that three people had died and 12 others had received medical care, including one person in critical condition. The director of the Brcko Health Centre, Jasmin Mehanovic, also said one of the injured was in life-threatening condition and could be transferred to the University Clinical Centre in Tuzla.
Conflicting casualty figures — and why they differ
Casualty figures were still evolving on Thursday evening, and reports differed. While the mayor and several outlets reported three dead and 12 injured, the Daily Sabah later quoted a Brcko hospital spokesperson, Salih Ibrahimbegovic, as saying four crew members were killed and 11 injured: three people among the 15 on board died in the crash and a fourth died later in hospital, with 12 people brought to the hospital in total. Readers should therefore treat the toll as provisional until EUFOR or Italy’s Defence Ministry confirms it.
Italy’s Ministry of Defence said on its official X account that the Italian CH-47, engaged in the EUFOR Althea operation, had crashed “for causes still being determined” and that rescue teams had intervened promptly. The ministry said it could not yet release further details, particularly on the condition of the personnel on board. EUFOR, in its own statement, confirmed only that “a number” of personnel had been killed or injured, and said more information would follow.
No civilian casualties, EUFOR says
EUFOR said the crash caused no damage to civilian property or infrastructure and no injuries to civilians. In a separate statement the force said: “no civilian infrastructure, property, or vehicles were damaged, and there were no injuries to civilians.” The cause of the crash has not yet been established, and EUFOR has announced a full and detailed investigation, urging the public to rely only on official channels for updates.
The EUFOR Althea mission
EUFOR Althea is the EU-led peacekeeping mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It took over from NATO in 2004 to help maintain security and oversee the military provisions of the peace agreement that ended the 1992–1995 war, operating under a United Nations Security Council mandate. The mission has around 1,200 soldiers, with several hundred troops from 24 European states, according to its website. The Italian contingent operates heavy-lift CH-47 Chinook helicopters as part of the force.
The crash is one of the most serious incidents involving the mission in recent years, and it comes as Bosnia’s post-war stability arrangements remain under international supervision more than three decades after the Dayton agreement. Further details, including the identities and nationalities of those killed and injured, had not been disclosed by late Thursday, and officials said the investigation would establish the circumstances of the crash.
